In this first blog post, I'd like to give you some initial valuable tips on how to care for and hang your artwork to prepare you for the needs of your new companion, so that you won't be unsure of each other when you first meet and you'll enjoy your desired painting for a long time.

Protection & Varnish

"Does my artwork need an extra layer of protection?"

All artworks are provided by me with a suitable varnish (sealant) for the protection and longevity of the colors. You do not need to worry about this point anymore. Already done.

The rust integrated on the canvas paintings, is varnished with a special protection that prevents further corrosion. Nevertheless, oxidation is a natural and deliberate process that can occur over the years.

Your painting should not be permanently exposed to direct sunlight in order to protect the protective layer and colors from damage caused by UV radiation as well as temperature differences due to extreme heating and to avoid fading.

Indoor climate

"What to consider when choosing the room?"

Since canvas artworks can be very sensitive to external climatic changes in its environment, please be sure to maintain a balanced indoor climate.

Avoid rooms with high humidity and places with strongly fluctuating temperature differences, as expansion or shrinkage processes in the various materials can cause warping (e.g. in the wooden frame) and/or damage (e.g. in the sealant) to the work. The correct environment is critical to the longevity of your artwork.

Where your painting feels not comfortable and in risk of being damaged:

  • in direct proximity to the heater or chimney

  • next to the house or balcony door, as well as the window

  • over steaming household devices (e.g. kettle)

  • in the bathroom or sauna area

"What is the best way to show off my painting?"

To show off your artwork to its full effect, make sure that it is hung at eye level. For example, a hanging system (gallery rail) for paintings can be a good and flexible adjustable option for you.

For additional solid edge protection and a classy presentation of your canvas painting, a matching shadow gap frame can showcase your piece to its best advantage and perfectly integrate it into your home.

Make sure your artwork has sufficient distance to benches or chairs so that no one gets hurt while standing up or sitting down and the painting gets damaged.

Do not use additional direct lighting if it emits intense heat radiation onto your artwork. The given, changing light conditions in the room can have a very exciting effect on your artwork and additionally give it a fresh liveliness.

"How do I choose the right hanging for my artwork?"

Besides a hanging system, I recommend the use of dowels and screws or screw hooks for large and heavy formats. Smaller and light paintings can be hung very easily with sturdy nails, matching the wall texture.

The matching hanging elements on the back of your artwork will be mounted by me in advance, so that your piece arrives already optimally prepared with you.

A spirit level should definitely be part of your basic equipment when mounting your painting, as well as perhaps an extra pair of eyes from another person.

Added spacers (e.g. felt glue dots) on the back of your painting or on the frame, provide a way for air to circulate behind the artwork.

Tip: To protect the painting and frame from skin lipids on your hands, it's best to wash them again beforehand.

"How do I clean my painting?"

Cleaning agents, alcohol or wet wipes do not belong on your painting under any circumstances, because it can damage the surface or the frame. Strong rubbing with a rag on the artwork, can also destroy the painting layer.

Just lightly dab your painting with a simple feather duster to remove any loose dust. Please be careful not to apply too much pressure and leave out the areas with rough texture and rust, so that you don't accidentally get stuck on the rougher surfaces.

Rooms where people smoke regularly or heavily are not a suitable place for your painting, due to yellowing of the surface. This discoloration is very difficult or impossible to clean or remove.

If you wish, I will be happy to advise you on the choice of the appropriate frame and discuss with you a suitable suspension as well as the optimal feel-good place for your desired painting.
